During this 5 week online course students will work from a variety of sources while addressing different aspects of color in painting. Whether working from a still life, self-portrait, photograph, drawing or a master painting color relationships will be a key concern. Each week a new topic or approach towards color will be discussed and explored in paint. We will cover ideas spanning from realist color matching to abstract construction based on color design as well as the importance of color saturation and temperature in painting. The fundamental relationship between value, contrast and color will be a running theme as well.
Students will work in their homes or studio spaces and paint from a variety of their own source images as prompted by the instructor each week. Students are encouraged to paint along and ask questions during instructor demonstrations.
Live Zoom demonstrations, topic lectures, slide talks and Q & A sessions will cover formal and technical ideas as well as historical and contemporary examples of relevant paintings. Some basic familiarity with oil painting will be useful.
