Plein Air Painting can be intimidating with all of its moving parts. In this 4 part, winter workshop, Suzie Baker OPA will use her humorous and informative teaching style to break down color in a way that you can understand and apply whether you are painting in the field or in the studio.
Week One Overview – Suzie will explain and demonstrate the principles of color in a way that is easy to grasp and apply. You will leave class with some assignments to step outside and record what you see and apply what you have learned. She will demonstrate techniques to use your iPhone camera, along with your artist’s eye, to adjust your photos onsite to serve you in your studio better.
Week Two – Suzie will show and demonstrate how light behaves under the effect of the atmosphere, time of day, and various weather conditions. As an assignment, you will continue to observe this and make notes (painted, written, and photographic) to serve your outdoor and studio painting.
Weeks Three and Four – Suzie will build on what you have learned with examples and demonstrations. You will apply your new knowledge, allowing you to interpret your scene or photograph to make more pleasing paintings.
Suzie Baker is an award-winning artist whose paintings are regularly on display in magazines, prestigious national shows and plein air invitationals. She became president of Oil Painters of America in 2020 and holds signature status in that distinguished organization as well as the American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, and others. In addition to being a still life and portrait artist, Suzie has been painting en plein air since she was a teenager. A sought-after instructor, for her humorous and informative style, Suzie teaches through her instructional video, Color Magic, and in workshops around the United States, Europe and close to her home in the Houston, Texas area.
