The repeated mark or motif that is repeated results in what we call a pattern. Pattern is ubiquitous as decoration or adornment for clothing, bedding, rugs, dishes, notebooks, and so many other things we use in everyday life. But some patterns are called upon to be images in their own right. A painting using pattern as its predominant format does not adorn something else. It invites you to be drawn into the repeated motif for its own sake.
In this presentation I will show you some examples of all-over design or pattern that, to me, are strong images in themselves. Then I will demonstrate a few approaches that I have used to create images that derive from a repeated mark. I would love to get your comments and thoughts on pattern and image as well, so I will leave time for discussion.
