Our live online classes are taught via Zoom. Students have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants, watch live demos and receive feedback and instruction. You will have access to a class chat forum where you can share work, comment and ask questions. Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll receive instructions about how to access the class.

To take this class, you need a microphone and camera enabled computer OR an IPad /smart tablet OR a smart phone (android or IOS) and a strong internet connection.

Being made of bricks and mortar, buildings are perhaps the epitome of solid, concrete form. And yet they can also be mysterious and evocative. How do we convey in paint both characteristics?

In this weekly class, we will explore ways to approach painting buildings in the landscape, putting down what we see simply while also capturing a sense of the specific. We will cover such things as painting from direct observation vs. from photo references, and we will aim to do a little of both, if possible. We will discuss specific methods for painting buildings, how best to use photo references, and the role that drawing plays. We will also focus on color unity, limiting and grouping values, suggesting versus delineating, composing and revising, and building interesting surfaces.

Each week will include discussion, examples and either live or recorded painting demos. Participants will paint on their own between class sessions and can share work for critique and ask questions in a private online group. Experience working from direct observation is helpful, but everyone is welcome.

Tracy Everly is an award-winning painter. She has studied occasionally at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but she is also largely self-taught, having put together her own educational path held together by dogged determination and love of art.
