From living machines to the stylized palm tree pattern of the artificial archipelago, Palm Jumeirah, earth’s surface has been sculpted by humans. The beauty of landforms spectacularly shaped for contemplation, relaxation and sustainable planting are often startling in scale. Landforms as aesthetics, such as the Subak rice terraces of Bali to the Al-Tahla floating islands, reveal that the sanctity of land is the axis mundi of such designs. Though technically ancient, these design principles — the sense of belonging and reciprocity — are more progressive than those of many contemporary gardens. History repeats itself and indigineous floating wetlands and green roofs are being rediscovered and packaged as new. Please join us as we honor designs passed down through generations that contain the wisdom of the past while orienting us towards a potential future symbiotically engaged with Nature.
