This workshop will focus on the process of doing value and color studies as preliminaries to larger studio and plein air paintings. These small studies (usually around 6″x8′ or so) are for our own enlightenment in working out the main design and color of whatever we have in mind to do. They can save a lot of time and effort before going into a larger painting. The idea is to get things down on paper or panel and to see how things are working or not…trying to get “An interesting arrangement of shapes, colors and edges”. They are fun to do and as they are small we can do a lot of them and learn quicker about design principle and color relationships. One gets tired doing larger paintings that just don’t turn out and these smaller studies can cut down on a lot of clunkers and give us a better chance of having a more successful painting. Their is a lot to be said for just painting without for thought, but much to be said for having a better idea or concept having some visual idea how it may come out. I often will do around 20 value studies and then pick out 8 or 10 of the best before doing those in color studies or directly into my studio painting. Often the small color studies can be finished off a bit more or just as is and worthy of putting in a frame to sell. I am continually surprised how more artists don’t do this, as to me and many others certainly see the value of them. We often don’t see the preliminary work done for great paintings in the Galleries, Exhibitions and Museums and can probably safely say that most of them had some sort of preliminary work done ahead of time. I will be doing several demonstrations in both value and color from single photographs and also putting together a design from multiple photos. Participants may use their own photos, but I will have to OK them or you can work from photos from my own collection that I have from all over the world. Students can do landscapes, figures, figurescapes, animals, etc. or whatever subject that you are excited about. We will work hard and have a good time doing it!
