Marjorie Hicks has a way with capturing the spirit and gesture of dogs so that their personalities radiate off the canvas! In this workshop you’ll learn how to capture the uniqueness of man’s best friend. Students will learn to paint quickly with decisiveness, while striving for a fresh carefree style. Marjorie will encourage students to use larger brushes in order to hasten their paintings along. Working from a minimal palette of paint colors to simplify color mixing, students will paint from images that Marjorie provides. Come prepared to work hard, and be FEARLESS-
You’ll be surprised at how simplifying what we see can say it all!
In this workshop, students will paint from Marjorie’s images (students may also use their own images for pet portraits, but they must have them approved by Marjorie first. Students will work from Marjorie’s images on the first day. They may work from their own approved images on the second day if they wish.) Our aim will be to get a believable form down quickly. We’ll paint in the deepest value shape first, then mids, and finally the light. That’s our game plan… SIMPLIFICATION!
At the end of the first two days, students will be given an assignment. The class will reconvene on August 28 for a group critique and demo.
Award winning artist, Marjorie Stewart Hicks‘s canvases capture the play of light and the drama of shadow and color that fall on any and all of her subjects. John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and Henry Potthast inspire her works. Marjorie is grateful for the talented and supportive community of artists in Nashville, where she resides. Marjorie is equally at home painting commissioned portraits in studio or outdoor scenes in a style inspired by the Impressionists.
