Our live online classes are taught via Zoom. Students have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants, watch live demos and receive feedback and instruction. You will have access to a class chat forum on our website where you can share work, comment and ask questions. You will also have access to recordings of the class that will expire 30 days after the final day of the course.
To take this class, you need a microphone and camera enabled computer OR an iPad /smart tablet OR a smart phone (android or IOS) and a strong internet connection.

Capture the beauty of Spring Gardens loosely and accurately with ink and watercolor washes. Using simple techniques and portable materials you will “travel” to a different location each week to sketch intimate and broad views of gardens, whether it be your own back yard or exotic places.
Lisa Snow Lady will guide you on this journey beginning with fun warm up exercises, moving onto to sketching from direct observation and photographic reference. You will learn how to travel light, simplify the subject matter, and gather tips for sketching outdoors.
All levels welcome.
Course Syllabus & Weekly Supplies:
WEEK 1, Observation: Starting Small, Vignettes, Value
Materials, Tips for outdoor sketching
Sketching close-up, intimate views with waterproof and water-soluble pen
Art Materials needed:
• Ultra fine Sharpie Pen/other waterproof fine tipped pen in black or other colors
• Water soluble pen such as Pilot brand
• Scratch paper
• Watercolor book, Canson, Moleskin, Strathmore, etc, ~5”x8” (may be larger)
• Small round watercolor brush – Princeton, #10
• Container for water
Subject Matter Students Provide: Potted plant/container plantings/bouquets/other objects
Week 2, The Garden in Color
Color matching exercises from photos
Inside Out – Sketching your garden from your window or balcony Simplifying the subject
Color Theory, Color mixing,
Art Materials: Students will need all materials on list
Week 3 Structures in the Garden
Subject Matter Students Provide: Photo of architecture in the landscape
Art Materials: Students will need all materials plus tracing paper, photo of garden with building
Week 4, Gardens Near and Far, Putting it all together
Gardens of choice,
Capturing the landscape, travel journal design ideas, combining words and images Art Materials: Students will need all materials, other materials to try, e.g. watercolor pencils Subject matter for students to provide: Photos of the landscape, other media to experiment with
Lisa Snow Lady has a BA in Art History and a BFA in Painting from the University of Washington, and a Certificate in Ornamental Horticulture from Edmonds College. She is a member of Urban Sketchers and has been teaching sketching for several years. She loves to encourage students of all levels.
