Our live online classes are taught via Zoom. Students have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants, watch live demos and receive feedback and instruction. You will have access to a class chat forum where you can share work, comment and ask questions. Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll receive instructions about how to access the class.

To take this class, you need a microphone and camera enabled computer OR an IPad /smart tablet OR a smart phone (android or IOS) and a strong internet connection.

In this 5-week class with Virginia based painter Laura Vahlberg, you will paint pictures with oil or acrylic paint from life indoors.

Topics will include:

  • Pace – painting really fast and painting very slowly
  • Picture unity in which all colors are tied together to build a convincing atmospheric envelope
  • Importance of value-the light world and the shadow world
  • The rules of composition and how to break them
  • Invention and the role it can play in working from life

Included in the class will be short lectures, live demonstrations, discussions and critique in a private online group.

Laura Vahlberg’s work has been exhibited around the U.S. and internationally (in Italy, Alabama, and Virginia). She has studied under artists including Israel Hershberg, Elana Hagler, Sarah Rutherfoord, Susan Zurbrigg, Ken Szmagaj, and Susan Jane Walp. She was born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1988 and now lives in Roanoke, Virginia. She received her Bachelors in Fine Arts at James Madison University.
