The first two days of this course will provide an introduction to the basic language of color presented through the Munsell System. If you have ever had trouble with color in your paintings this class is for you!

Through a series of color exercises and simple still life subjects we will learn how to see, mix and control color in our paintings. The Munsell System uses the three basic properties of Hue, Value and Chroma to describe any color that can be used in artist’s pigments. It solves the confusion and frustration many painters have with this critical aspect of their work. The system utilizes the most current science of color perception and makes painting in color logical and highly efficient.

Days three-five will focus on painting the garden rose, one of the most beautiful forms in the botanical world. Painters will have the opportunity to study their complex geometry and exquisite color subtlety. The course will include an indirect method of painting and the introduction of a specific limited palette. A brief slide lecture on the history of the genre will inspire us as we explore this timeless motif. Previous painting experience is encouraged.
