Our live online classes are taught via Zoom. Students have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants, watch live demos and receive feedback and instruction. You will have access to a class chat forum on our website where you can share work, comment and ask questions. You will also have access to recordings of the class that will expire 30 days after the final day of the course.
To take this class, you need a microphone and camera enabled computer OR an iPad /smart tablet OR a smart phone (android or IOS) and a strong internet connection.

In this four-week course with teaching artist Kathleen Speranza, learn the basic principles of the Munsell System of Color, one of the the best tools for understanding and communicating the language of color. After 30+ years of teaching, Kathleen has become a devotee of the Munsell system and has embraced how it allows her to accurately mix colors and understand its nuances. She will teach the Munsell principles while demonstrating how they can be used in an effective and practical way in your art practice. This system will offer you a new way of thinking and give you the confidence to mix any color that you want with minimal confusion.
Week One: Introduction to the Munsell Color System
Demonstration of basic principles Hue, Value and Chroma
Explanation of color choices in palette
Week Two: The Power of Neutrals
Introduction to the Neutral Scale as the basic element of the system
Mixing demonstration and examples of neutral in mixing
Week Three: Munsell from Observation.
Discover and define the colors from a series of objects from nature
Learn to think in hue, value and chroma from an observed source
Week Four: Studies from Life
Simple still life with a practical example of Munsell in action.

Kathleen Speranza earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University School of Art. She has had an academic career of more than thirty years teaching painting and drawing at the college level. She has been on the Faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design. She now leads painting workshops both nationally and Internationally.
