Based on his groundbreaking book with Rebecca Crowell, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations, this cold wax bootcamp offers an intensive overview of techniques Jerry uses in his own work and those he teaches in his introductory workshops. Participants will explore basic materials, tools, surfaces, and techniques. Artists will paint with cold wax, oils, pigment sticks, and powdered pigments, and experience the expressive potential of layering, texture, and mark-making. Jerry will demonstrate the majority of techniques over 3 consecutive days, then return for 2 weekly follow-up classes. This gives artists time to develop work between sessions. Jerry will answer questions and comment on work.

Jerry McLaughlin is best known for his powerful paintings built through an intensive working of layers of oil paint, pigments, and cold wax medium, along with additives like earth, sand, and wood ash. His textured, monochromatic, minimalist works are informed by the structural world of concrete, adobe, stone, and steel, as well as by the decay, erosion, and weathering of those materials. Though McLaughlin is now a full time abstract artist, he initially trained as a pediatric critical care physician, an influence still palpable in his work. In 2017, he co-authored the first ever comprehensive book on cold wax medium, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations, winner of two international book awards. He is represented by DZINE Gallery in San Francisco and HG Contemporary in New York City. He lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with his husband, Mike, and their dog, Bert.
