Artists and authors have been illustrating their correspondence for centuries. Beatrix Potter sprinkled her letters with bunnies in the garden, Saint Exupery drew stars, and Picasso, Victor Hugo, Gaugin, Corot and Van Gogh, just to name a few, combined words and pictures when writing to friends. Of course, these artists and authors didn’t have access to email or texts (thank goodness). And although we do, it might be time for a “Slow Letter” movement, much like Slow Food, where we take the time and make the effort to communicate in a more creative, personal way. Join Jane Barton in exploring this old idea and discover how to make it work for us in today’s high-tech world, using words and pictures of our own. All skill levels welcome!
In the tradition of the early artists of the West, Jane Barton loves to capture the vanishing scene: old cars in Cuba, snow bound aspens in Colorado, colorful old Italian fishing boats, sunsets on the Catalina Mountains near her home in Arizona. Painting constantly “en plein air” was the key to finding the information she needed to move from her early career as an award winning illustrator and graphic designer to her beautiful studio work. She studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, has a B.A. from Boston University and an M.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University School of Visual Arts.
Barton has lived in Arizona for over 40 years and loves the desert landscape but lately travel has taken her to Greece, Italy and Iceland and a recent collection celebrates the beauty and movement of the water she studied there. Her travel sketchbooks inspired The Travelers’ Creative Sketchbook and Illustrated Letters classes, which she teaches in Arizona, Illinois and Washington.
Jane is a member of the Salmagundi Club, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Laguna Plein Air Painters and a Signature member of both the American Women Artists and Arizona Plein Air Painters. www.janebartonstudio.com
