This 5-week class is an introduction to formal abstraction that will have a dramatic and lasting impact on the way you paint. Learn how to deconstruct an image, focusing on value, shape, and color while making a transcription of an old master painting. This is not master copying as you may have experienced it before!
This class is part of an ongoing series. It will cover new material each series. You do not need to have taken James’s previous class to participate.
James Bland is a figurative artist who enjoys the surprises and the surrender of control that oil painting uniquely offers. Memory, folklore and dreams are the main subjects of his work and his paintings offer tantalising glimpses of narratives alongside the rigorously-observed depictions of light and form.
