In this 6-week class with artist Gage Opdenbrouw, delve into the lessons of some of the world’s renowned contemporary painting masters, explore their tools and techniques, their ways of looking, translating and notating, and their attitudes toward what makes a painting.
We will begin with discussions of the works of many of the great artists of the present and relatively recent past. Participants will look at and analyze their lessons and discover how to apply these lessons to their own artwork. Gage will share examples of his personal work to show how these masters have influenced his personal work through their critical eye, their thoughts, and their hand. In addition to making quick transcriptions of the works of these masters, we will do our best to absorb their insights into our own work. As Opdenbrouw points out, “How could you not be tempted to tread some of the road cleared through the thicket by the lions of the past?”
