Our live online classes are taught via Zoom. Students have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants, watch live demos and receive feedback and instruction. You will have access to a class chat forum where you can share work, comment and ask questions. Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll receive instructions about how to access the class.
To take this class, you need a microphone and camera enabled computer OR an IPad /smart tablet OR a smart phone (android or IOS) and a strong internet connection.
In this online Gouache Portrait painting class with teaching artist Emily Hirtle, work from life and reference material to create portraits in gouache.
Working from life, participants will paint a self-portrait and a portrait of a family member or friend. Work from reference material will emphasize portrait composition. The first assignment will be a master copy of a gouache portrait from a contemporary painter that works primarily in aqueous media. Participants will learn about artistic anatomical structure, additional formal elements of image making, application of the paint and the materiality of the medium and a variety of surfaces gouache can be applied to.
