Oil painting on copper was once a common practice in Northern Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Painters like Rembrandt, Artemesia Gentileschi and even more recently, Lucian Freud have taken advantage of the unique qualities of oil on copper. Historically, paintings on copper have tended to be very small, tight, technical works, but upon investigation one can find a wide range of practices and styles. In this workshop, we’ll discuss some of the history of painting on copper, the necessary preparation and some technical details. There will be a demonstration of an oil painting on copper from start to finish as well as critique of participant work, and general discussion on the topic of oil painting. Participants do not need to paint on copper to participate in critiques and discussions.

Ben Shamback is a still life and landscape painter, working almost exclusively in oil on copper. Ben received a BA in Illustration from Central Connecticut State University in 1996 and in 1999, an MFA in Painting from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri. Ben was awarded the Faber Birren Color Award in 2003, and the Gold Medal of Honor for Oil Painting from the Allied Artists of America in 2004. Realist painter Philip Pearlstein honored Ben with the Realism Award at the 2002 Biennial Exhibition in Newport News, Virginia. Ben has had 21 solo exhibitions in the last 20 years across the US, from New Orleans to Connecticut. Ben has also exhibited at the Salmagundi and National Arts Club in New York City four times each.
