BJ Morrison McKay
Optional profile fields
BJ Morrison McKay is a Southern California based artist working primarily in oils in a representational style, yet her interests also extend to dabbling in pastels, acrylics, paper crafting and even painting fun and fanciful designs onto bird houses and river rocks.
BJ became interested in oil painting after stumbling upon a plein air event on Balboa Island, CA, in 2016. She returned several times over the five day event to watch the pros in action, and the following year signed up for her first oil painting workshop.
Since then she has taken workshops and courses from Debra Huse, Greg LaRock, Jane Hunt and Aimee Erickson. During the pandemic year of 2020 she also took several months of online classes from Ray Roberts and became a self-proclaimed demo watching junkie during a year when so much quality art instruction moved online.
This was also the year she started submitting her own work to juried shows, making her art publicly available for the first time. In November, 2020, she won an honorable mention in only the second juried show she ever entered.
Dedicated to learning and building upon her skills, BJ is a member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Laguna Organization for Community Arts and the Huntington Beach Artists Council.
Thanks to my artist mom, I understood how to mix primary colors into secondaries before learning my ABCs. Yet I didn’t pursue my own artistic leanings in earnest until after leaving a long corporate career, at which time Mom’s influences flooded my senses and filled me with inspiration. Now, with every painting, I try to convey the beauty before me and bring the viewer to that emotional space that moved me to attempt to capture its essence with a paint filled brush.
